visual/audio imprinting?

Journal Entry: Sat Apr 16, 2011, 2:10 PM

not sure what else to call this, but I've always wondered if it happens to a lot of other people too...
I'm a little ADD and so I have a really hard time focusing on stuff for long periods of time.. this applies most of all to artwork and sitting still working on art.  one thing that really helps is to have something to listen to or watch while i work.  (i know a lot of folks are actually this way, ADD or no.. on the flip side, :iconwhiteflyinglizard: has to have silence to be able to really focus.. i'm pretty sure i dive him batcrap insane with all my noise)
Sometimes it's audiobooks, but usually it's movies or tv shows on the other monitor.

Anyways, when i listen to or watch something while i work, the memory of that thing gets embedded into the art.  years later i can go back, look at the picture, and tell you what i was listening to/watching.  I can even tell you what part of the picture is assigned to what movie..
seriously!

for example, this one: [link]
while i worked on the big tree, i watched the 5th element, family guy, and some weird animated thing with robert downey jr. in it..
on the mosses and sticks in the background was arrested development and the 10th kingdom.  the pond plants in the lower right hand corner.. more family guy.. uh.. the toad and some mosses was date with an angel....

a lot of other things, including the mini-waterfall in the background was watching House, specifically with all the cameron/chase drama.  i remember it upsetting me more than it should have, and then later finding out those two actors were together and then broke up irl.  whaaaa.

older than that, you say?

this one was almost all watching the office.. though while i was working on her left shoulder, we watched grumpy old men.

[link]
this was almost all watching bones.  specifically, the episodes where angela is in the relationship with her girlfriend, roxie.. although i did try watching nip/tuck while i was working on the log - i didn't get into it.

now we're before i started watching netflix... now it's just audiobooks.  this one was shutter island.

terry pratchett's discworld!

i could go on but... you get the point.  i have such a CRAPPY memory in every other aspect, it's scientifically interesting to me that i remember this kind of thing so easily..
though i can only remember when i'm looking at the picture.  if i couldn't see it, and you asked me about a certain image, i'd have no clue.  it's imprinted somehow...
anyways.  anyone else do this?  anyone know why?  come talk psych with me :D

  • Mood: Content
  • Listening to: annie brushing her teeth
  • Watching: grey;s anatomy
  • Drinking: TEA it will always be tea!

Yes yes yes me too! I ALWAYS listen to audiobooks while I draw, and I can literally remember which story goes with which picture from when I was like, 7. (I'm 20 now). I wonder why? Also, drawing in class or whatever never distracts me - it can help me focus.

This kind of memory is the reason I get so antsy if a professor doesn't want me drawing in class. Sometimes I draw because I'm not paying attention, but sometimes it's because I HAVE to be looking at an image while I'm listening. If it's a super visual presentation, I don't always need to, but trying to sit up and pay attention WITHOUT doing something with my pencil is really frustrating for me.

I've done the same thing with tv shows. I don't watch and draw at the same time a lot, but I used to draw while my parents watched tv. I remember drawing an Elephant in pencil (why? I don't remember. Art assignment?) and my parents were watching SVU. Not exactly the most pleasant memories with that drawing in particular.

My sketchbook drawings often have interesting words or noteworthy things from the lecture scribbled in, and sometimes these little pockets of info lead to inspiration and ideas. I've studied a lot using my sketchbooks. I'll draw images of things I need to remember.

I'm the same way though - crappy memory in every other respect! But when it comes to visual input, I'm good to go. Navigation is no problem if I've driven the route before, but if I come at an intersection from a different angle or at night, I might not recognize it. I can't pay attention in class or remember lectures or dates without drawing and writing while I listen. I often lose things if I don't make a mental visual note of where I put them.

I do this at times. What happens to me mostly is when I listen to a song I haven't heard in a while, it reminds me of the point in my life that i first heard it.

I can't watch tv and draw at the same time. For me it must be either the one thing or the other. I will say some of my best random sketches have emerged from boring point tallying card games like Canasta and Five Crowns with the family! lol! :D As for music and art? I do focus better on what I'm doing if I've got some kind of melody playing around me. Most of the time it's Celtic stuff like Robin Mark or Loreena McKennitt... other times it's Skillet or Pillar ... or if I'm feeling particularly song-birdish that day I'll just turn on iTunes or the iPod and sing along with almost every single piece of music I've ever owned... even the occasional puppet/veggie tale song that I've forgotten to uncheck from the last time I burned performance discs. =P I think I get more accomplished during the song-bird days than the other ones, but I don't think any of it follows through and imprints itself into my artwork. I'm a lump that way... :hmm:

Interesting. I'm rather the complete opposite. I have successfully overcome the ADD that affected me when I was a kid, but unfortunately I cannot multitask at all. I could be working on a piece of artwork while music is playing in the background and if it stops I won't notice at all until I take a breather from what I'm doing xD Unless its heavily themed off of some song or something, I will have absolutely no idea what I was listening to/watching at the time (most times, since I don't notice music, there isn't even anything in the background!)

I am ADD with art and writing in the same way, I work best with something on in the background which is usually the TV on whatever happens to be on tv.

I can't remember what I was watching when I drew something but I can tell you exactly what was happening the first time I heard a song or what song was playing when something in particular happened.

I sort of do that, though oddly less with art. XD When I study for tests, I remember what's going on in the lecture when I wrote something and when a particular doodle was drawn in the lecture (which helps me remember the lecture...). But for the most part, I'm more of a smell person. The smell of something will be associated with another random thing. Like the smell of sharpie reminding me of when the Pokemon Silver remake came out. The figurine thing smelled like sharpie for the longest time.

But it's rare for me to remember specifically for a larger art project what was going on. :( I'm not surprised about that though.

Interesting...
I need background noise to concentrate on drawing too. In fact, I think the main reason I've had so much trouble with digital art lately is cuz this "new" computer crashes when I try to stream videos... Music just doesn't work as well for me.

I usually can't remember what I was watching or listening to later though. O.o

I had to do that when I studied homework or for a test. I'd have something going on in the background always. Then when I get to the test, I'll remember the answer because I was listening/watching to something specific at that time. XD
