visual/audio imprinting?

Journal Entry: Sat Apr 16, 2011, 2:10 PM

not sure what else to call this, but I've always wondered if it happens to a lot of other people too...
I'm a little ADD and so I have a really hard time focusing on stuff for long periods of time.. this applies most of all to artwork and sitting still working on art.  one thing that really helps is to have something to listen to or watch while i work.  (i know a lot of folks are actually this way, ADD or no.. on the flip side, :iconwhiteflyinglizard: has to have silence to be able to really focus.. i'm pretty sure i dive him batcrap insane with all my noise)
Sometimes it's audiobooks, but usually it's movies or tv shows on the other monitor.

Anyways, when i listen to or watch something while i work, the memory of that thing gets embedded into the art.  years later i can go back, look at the picture, and tell you what i was listening to/watching.  I can even tell you what part of the picture is assigned to what movie..
seriously!

for example, this one: [link]
while i worked on the big tree, i watched the 5th element, family guy, and some weird animated thing with robert downey jr. in it..
on the mosses and sticks in the background was arrested development and the 10th kingdom.  the pond plants in the lower right hand corner.. more family guy.. uh.. the toad and some mosses was date with an angel....

a lot of other things, including the mini-waterfall in the background was watching House, specifically with all the cameron/chase drama.  i remember it upsetting me more than it should have, and then later finding out those two actors were together and then broke up irl.  whaaaa.

older than that, you say?

this one was almost all watching the office.. though while i was working on her left shoulder, we watched grumpy old men.

[link]
this was almost all watching bones.  specifically, the episodes where angela is in the relationship with her girlfriend, roxie.. although i did try watching nip/tuck while i was working on the log - i didn't get into it.

[link]
now we're before i started watching netflix... now it's just audiobooks.  this one was shutter island.

[link]
terry pratchett's discworld!

i could go on but... you get the point.  i have such a CRAPPY memory in every other aspect, it's scientifically interesting to me that i remember this kind of thing so easily..
though i can only remember when i'm looking at the picture.  if i couldn't see it, and you asked me about a certain image, i'd have no clue.  it's imprinted somehow...
anyways.  anyone else do this?  anyone know why?  come talk psych with me :D

  • Mood: Content
  • Listening to: annie brushing her teeth
  • Watching: grey;s anatomy
  • Drinking: TEA it will always be tea!

wow, that's a really good idea, I never thought of that! I'll have to utilize that method in the near future, I'm sure.

It's a curse. In every single show or movie I watch, or even the books I read, they ALWAYS kill off my favorite characters, and I mean ALWAYS. :tantrum: It's so depressing . . .

Now I'll just have to arm myself with gag reels! Thanks for the tip!

I would get distracted if I watched TV shows while I work, but I almost always have to listen to some kind of music while I work to keep me focused.

I don't do this as much with artwork, but if I am reading something and listening to music, I always tend to associate that book with that same piece of music.

Just an example. Reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and listening to Backstreet Boy's "Black and Blue" album.

Hmmm, well, certain songs bring back memories of what I was doing when I first started listening to them. But only sometimes. Certain TV shows bring back memories too. Inuyasha, for instance, always makes me think of winter, because I watched a lot of it one winter. Certain places/ situations remind me very strongly of dreams I've had.

It's not quite the same thing, but the way memories work is always interesting.

I totally do this! I can look at old pictures and remember I was watching a movie while drawing it. I have one very old pencil drawing that I made while watching Jumanji, and I can't look at it without thinking of the movie. Lately in my life I've bee listening to TONS of audiobooks, so the work I do is embedded with the memories of those books.

I'm also like you in that I have to have something else to be paying attention to while drawing and painting. If I focus 100% on my work, my brain hurts. ><; Or I guess, it's like I'm not focusing at all if I'm doing that. It was tough in art school when one instructor insisted no one listen to music or chat too much while working. Just to focus totally on their work in the studio time. I did my worst work in that class, as you can imagine. XD

Oh man, this is JUST like me. <___> Because of my attention span, I don't really work for a long time on pictures that I promise to someone else-- because sitting and trying to get it all done perfectly [in my mind] would take days. But on personal pieces that I've really tried on, I could tell you exactly what songs I was listening to, what movie I was watching, or even what food I was eating at the time of drawing it. xD

I'm the same way, though, if someone asked me without me looking at the picture, I couldn't remember. Looking at it is like a trigger to the memory. c:
